Methamphetamine

It will ruin your life.

Sheriff Tom Richie has been at the forefront of the Methamphetamine battle. Under Richie, Barron County has become known as a leader in Wisconsin in the fight against Methamphetamine, with arrests and convictions.

Richie has emphasized a dual approach to the Methamphetamine crisis. He has initiated aggressive county-wide enforcement, and since Richie became Sheriff in 2002, the Barron County Sheriff Department has presented approximately 100 educational presentations on the topic of Methamphetamine throughout the County, many of them presented by Sheriff Richie.

Methamphetamine, also known as: meth, ice, crank, crystal, speed and glass, is a devastating drug that has had a tremendous effect on our community. Meth is a powerful stimulant that attacks the user’s central nervous system. One time usage can permanently alter the brain’s chemistry so drastically, that hope for a normal life may be lost. This horrible drug is destroying families.

Without proactive methamphetamine enforcement, significant increases in violent crime, burglaries, theft domestic abuse, child abuse and neglect will result. Meth has been a significant problem in our community, and is so accessible because it is cheap, easy to make and easy to buy.

Meth Conference 2

Four years ago, Richie stated that the only way to address the skyrocketing property crime rate and other crimes in Barron County was to go after the methamphetamine users and dealers. He firmly believed there was a direct correlation between Barron County’s high property crime rate, and Meth users/dealers.

His record speaks volumes. The property crime rate has decreased each year Richie has been Sheriff. In fact, the current rate shows a 56% reduction compared to 2002, and is the lowest it has been in ten years.

In 2004, Barron County led the state with 91 methamphetamine cases being submitted to the state crime lab - that’s Number 1 out of the 72 Wisconsin counties. In 2005, Barron County was number 2 out of the 72 counties (only 2 cases behind Polk County.)

Under Sheriff Richie’s leadership, Barron County will remain on top of the Methamphetamine crisis.
